Liberia: ArcelorMittal, VP Boakai, donate & console Christians after crusade stampede
By Patrick Stephen Tokpah in Monrovia
On Wednesday, Jan. 26, world’s steel giant ArcelorMittal-Liberia, donated $10,000 (USD) to survivors and the families of Christians killed recently at a church evangelistical meeting at New Kru Town which ended tragically. On Thursday, a day after, ex-Vice President Joseph N. Boakai also donated an unspecified amount to victims of the disaster.

Both Vice President Boakai and Marcus Wleh, AML’s public relations officer who presented an amount of $10,000 purse on behalf of his company, separately expressed deep condolences to survivors and relatives of those who perished in that deadly stampede that killed at least 29 people on the night of Jan. 19, 2022.
Our correspondent in Liberia said, quoting Marcus Wleh, that the donated amount “is among others meant to open a seed fund for children who lost their parents, including survivors to the D. Tweh Church Stampede.”
At a town hall in New Kru Town where a brief ceremony had been organized for VP Boakai and members of his Unity Party, he and his escorts placed a wreath, together with lit candles they had carried along, to the altar as a sign of tribute to those who died.
“This is not about politics,” he emphasized, disclosing, “but this is about feeling from one who is like you. We know how people feel losing their relatives, family and loved ones in such a painful manner.”
A church evangelism gathering initially set for three nights by the Word Outreach Ministry led by Pastor Abraham Kromah ended in tragedy during its first night of worship, Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, wounding dozens and leaving over two dozen worshippers dead.
A group of disadvantaged Liberians dubbed as “Zogo”, mostly youths and marginalized by society itself, are said to have invaded the church’s meeting, allegedly brandishing “deadly weapons,” snatching purses and cell phones from women, and threatening harm, thereby resulting in a stampede.
Local police forces have made several arrests and the incident is still being investigated according to police sources in the capital, Monrovia.
