Liberia’s Independence: U.S. televangelist Rev. Paula White-Cain’s powerful message to the nation

“He did not dwell on blame but called the people to action: Come, let us build”-Paula Cain on Prophet Nehemiah

All across the entire world today, Liberians and foreign friends joyously celebrated the country’s 179th Independence Day Anniversary and because the Holiday this year fell on Sunday (today) the main festivities would continue tomorrow Monday, July 27, in the country’s coastal city of Buchanan, Grand Bassa, roughly two-hour drive east of the capital, Monrovia. 

Already, US televangelist and author of several Christian books, Rev. Paula White-Cain flew into the West African nation to join the celebration, at the request of Pres. Joe Boakai’s government. Today, Rev. Cain spoke at a Thanksgiving service in Buchanan and delivered a soul-touching message to Liberians while praying for God’s divine direction over the state, according to reporters covering the event. 

Blessed by Almighty God, with immense natural and human resources, Liberia stood as a lone nation on the continent of Africa, fiercely resisting White-European colonizers who commandeered fellow African and had them loaded onboard slave ships bound for Europe. It eventually declared independence on July 26, 1847. 

According to the local KMTV Liberia, Rev. Paula Cain, this “moment [of celebration] goes beyond marking a national anniversary: it is a testimony of God’s faithfulness, the resilience of the Liberian people, and the enduring hope of a nation preserved through generations of challenge and renewal.”

Accordingly, “Liberia,” she maintained, “has been preserved for a purpose” acknowledging how this nation itself has already survived “wars, political transitions, economic hardship, disease, and rebuilding,” and “yet endure[d]” it all.  

However, all of this development didn’t come “by chance” because “nations,” she observed, “do not survive by accident.”

Instead, she said, it is God who preserved them. She then cited biblical scriptures like the cases of “Noah, Moses, and Esther,” pointing out that it’s God who preserved them for “specific purposes.”

She reasoned that “Liberia’s survival points to a purpose that is still unfolding,” an experience she believed is embedded in its history itself and capable of shaping the country’s destiny.

She further warned that this nation, Liberia, “risks losing its identity,” that is if it forgets her own history-these include its uncomfortable past wars and political upheavals.  

The US televangelist, with a huge social media following, spoke of the fine examples of Prophet Nehemiah, the Persian King’s Cupbearer, who lived in the city of “Susa” (Shushan) and had traveled to Jerusalem to build the city’s broken walls.

She assessed Nehemiah’s mission didn’t limit him to restoring the city’s broken walls which made Jews vulnerable to unnecessary armed attacks, but that Nehemiah worked with his people out of pure love in order to bring about reawakening and spiritual revival to Jews.

Eventually, she recognized that Nehemiah succeeded in his rebuilding mission of the Jerusalem Wall due to several factors among them “Unity” in addition to fast and praying for without these, his success may have been difficult if not impossible!

Rev. Cain used Prophet Nehemiah’s wisdom and selflessness in works for both people and God as exceptional examples available to Liberian leaders particularly, something they could use to make their country better!

For true leadership and humility, one of several sub-topics in her speech, she said must be matched by good “character.” And not only that, but true leadership also according to Rev. Cain must equally go hand in hand with “responsibility, integrity, and the willingness to say: “Lord, start with me.”

Concluding, on Nehemiah’s story, she said: “Like Nehemiah, who trusted God’s promises beyond Jerusalem’s ruins, Liberia is called to believe its future is greater than its past.” 

“With faith, unity and determination, the nation can move forward into new opportunities and renewal.”
